Usually Enemies, Bald Eagles Adopt Red-Tailed Hawk ChickJune 13, 2017 – A pair of bald eagle parents in British Columbia have a surprising addition to their feathered family – a red-tailed hawk chick. Bald eagles and red-tailed hawks are normally bitter rivals, and it’s not unusual to see them engaged in fierce aerial battles. Experts hypothesize that the hawk was taken as a potential meal after hatching or while still in its shell. Its hungry squawks for food and open beak may have prompted the eagles to feed it as one of their own. The hawk chick must next survive its growing step siblings. Experts estimate the chick to be about four weeks old meaning it could attempt to fly in the coming week.Click here to read more about the bald eagles and the red-tailed hawk chick.
